Mobile analytics and billing provider Bango published a blog post yesterday indicating that less than 5% of mobile revenue in 2010 were generated via in-app billing. Though sluggish, the company also predicts in-app revenue growth of 600% in 2011.

“In the mobile market, in-app billing as a charging model has been talked about for a long time,” the post explains. ”This is the idea that the download happens without charge, but continued use of the app, or particular app features, would trigger a charge to the consumer. The thought is that this model provides for unobstructed access to the app to maximize distribution, followed by payment at the optimal time of usage, to maximize conversion rates.”

While there’s many possible reasons for the slow adoption of in-app billing by developers, Bango says a large factor is technical limitations on the part of app stores. For example, RIM has yet to implement an in-app billing model for its App World marketplace, but plans to in early 2011. Factors like this helped Bango arrive at the 600% growth prediction for next year, which also equates to nearly 30% of all mobile app payments.

“The platform battle next year will focus on developers as much as users, who will need to determine which of the app platforms to prioritise for development and distribution,” the post continues. ”Those that deliver most revenue will capture greatest mind-share.”

When we talk about app stores, the conversation is normally dominated by Apple and Google but Research In Motion wants to be a part of this discussion and its BlackBerry App World has now surpassed 10,000 mobile programs.

“BlackBerry #AppWorld is 10,000 apps strong and growing – what apps do you love?” the company said on its Twitter account.

This is a relatively small number when you compare it to Apple and Google, though, as the App Store for the iPhone has more than 250,000 programs and the Google Android Market is at about 100,000 apps. The BlackBerry is at somewhat of a disadvantage though, as a large portion of its base are enterprise users who aren’t even allowed to download App World programs.

RIM is going to have to bolster its consumer-facing app selection though, as it is increasingly targeting mainstream users and smartphone buyers expect to be able to augment their devices with apps. The RIM BlackBerry already has some of the bases covered because it has apps for Facebook, Twitter and YouTube but it needs to do more to attract developers.

RIM recently launched the App World 2.0 and it featured developer-friendly features like carrier billing and compatibility with 2D QR codes. I’ve still heard from many developers who say that creating mobile programs for the BlackBerry is a painful experience, so let’s hope RIM can quiet some of these complaints.

A nice little package of webOS 2.0 beta shots has shown up over at Wibozi, and it’s looking nice. One very handy and apparently easily-accessed feature is setting default apps for filetypes; with the right combination of sideloading and file management, serious hacks probably won’t be necessary for webOS devices to play uncommon and nonstandard formats.

There are lots of suggested and default services shown as well, though we’re told that Dropbox and MobileMe are actually only there as part of the QuickOffice suite. That’s not to say webOS won’t have native access to those (though Dropbox seems more likely than MobileMe), just a clarification so you know what’s going on there.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the webOS tablets, personally — I think they’ll be a more open and customizable experience than iOS and more user-friendly and tablet-oriented than Android. We’ve still got Android 3.0 coming down the pipe, though, so anything could happen.
